What are credits and how do they work?
Credits pay for hosted AI. 100 credits = $1, and a credit is worth the same whatever you spend it on. Captions cost 2 credits per minute, voiceover 0.01 credits per character (100 characters = 1 credit), avatar video 24 credits a second at 480p or 45 at 720p, and voice cloning 25 credits per clone. Image, video, music and sound models show their exact price before you generate. Credits come with the Creator plan and work on every model. Editing and exporting are free and never use credits.
What does Formats cost if I never use hosted AI?
Nothing. The full editor, your agent connection, every caption style for captions you write or import, SRT and VTT, video understanding and search on your Mac, stock media and unlimited 4K exports without a watermark are free forever. Hosted AI (AI captions, voiceover, music, sound effects, image and video generation, voice cloning and avatars) runs on credits, which come with the Creator plan.
Do Claude Code, Codex or GitHub Copilot use my credits?
No. Your agent runs on its own plan and sign-in, such as ChatGPT for Codex or Claude for Claude Code, and Formats never sees those credentials. Credits pay only for the hosted AI that Formats runs for you, such as the voiceover, music and sound effects your agent adds to a video.
Is there a free trial?
Free is the whole editor and your agent, forever, with no time limit. Hosted AI is not part of Free: it needs credits, which come with Creator. Creator is month to month, so you can try it for one month and cancel in the billing portal.
Can I buy credits without a plan?
No. Credits come with Creator, and top-ups are an add-on for Creator subscribers. Top-ups never expire, and you can buy 1 to 200 packs of 500 credits at once. Credits you bought earlier keep working on any plan.
Can I change or cancel my plan anytime?
Yes. Dodo Payments handles plan changes in the billing portal: switch between monthly and annual billing, or cancel. Credits already granted stay usable until they expire, and a cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you paid for. If you need more credits than Creator includes, top up any time, or talk to us about Enterprise.
Do unused credits roll over?
Monthly plan grants expire after 30 days and annual grants after 365 days; they do not roll over. Purchased top-up credits never expire. All credits share one balance and Dodo consumes the oldest available credits first.
What happens if I run out of credits?
The editor keeps working exactly as before. Editing, unlimited projects, stock footage, sound effects and unlimited watermark-free exports never use credits, and you can still write captions by hand or import an SRT/VTT file. To use hosted AI again, top up on Creator, wait for your next plan grant, or start Creator if you are on Free.
Why do voice cloning and avatars need a paid plan?
They copy a real person's voice or face, so a verified payment method stands behind every clone and avatar. Upload a short sample of a voice you have consent to use and we create a custom voice for voiceover; each clone costs 25 credits. Creator includes voice cloning and AI avatars at 480p and 720p.
Is a plan for one person?
Yes. A Creator plan is for one person, with their own sign-in, and works on every Mac they sign in to. For a team, talk to us about Enterprise: a seat for each person on one invoice, with credits sized to what you make.
